People overestimate what they can do in a month and underestimate what they can do in 10 years.
Last week I spoke about patience and mentioned 10 year goals and this is just another part of it.
Think about it though. I have seen people tell me they want to lose 30 pounds in a month but think it’s crazy to try and do something like lose 3 pounds a month for a year. Which one do you think they would have a better chance of achieving?
People tell me all the time about their dream vacations. Often, it’s been their dream vacation for 10, or even 20 years. Recently, I told one such person to tally up the costs of their dream vacation and the total came to $10,000. They said they believed they would eventually make this trip but hadn’t saved anything toward it yet. I did some simple math and asked them if they could save $167 a month and of course, they said that would be easy. $167 a month for 5 years and they could afford their dream trip. Do you think they did it? Of course not, that’s five years away, who could do that.
I have drawn up so many winning scenarios for clients with their businesses but this inability to plan and commit to anything long term keeps holding them back.
Play with this for a minute. Think about some of the big things you want to accomplish and work a plan backward for ten years and let me know if your dreams seem more obtainable after you do it.
Your success is my success,
Walter
