A lot of people seeking out coaching, consulting or advice don’t get this.
“I have a great idea and I know it will work, all I need is the capital”. You would be surprised at just how many times people have contacted me and shared this with me. First of all, nowhere in the description of what I do does it say anything about funding, loaning, angel investing or anything of the sort but more importantly, no one is going to fund your “idea”.
They have all watched Shark Tank but all they remember is that those billionaires just gave people with new ideas millions of dollars. They seemed to have missed the parts where the candidates demonstrated years of blood sweat and tears, exhausting their resources, collecting data, testing markets, experimenting and collecting data. Of course they didn’t notice either that the majority of people didn’t receive any help and that those that did had to forfeit either a portion of ownership or profits.
While on the subject, you know what else coaches, consultants and advisors don’t do? They don’t do the work for you. Yep! I already did the work and one of the biggest reasons that I sold my business is because I didn’t want to have to do the work anymore. I can advise you on what you can do, I can help you save time and money without repeating the mistakes I made, but I can’t do the work for you.
The person currently working at the printing factory wishing someone would give them a million dollars for their idea on how to open a new and improved dairy farm – not a good client for me.
The person working 80 hours a week milking their cows every morning, then feeding them, cleanin the barns, repairing the fences, selling the milk and doing all of the paperwork who wants to start working less, making more and creating a sellable dairy production business – that’s the client I’m looking for.
