Working with folks on goal setting I have come to realize that one of the biggest obstacles for people is that they are unable to truly envision the success they strive for.
Many still struggle with making any goals at all and I feel that this comes from the lack of believing that they can achieve them.
For those that make goals the majority won’t follow up with any real plans for achieving their goals and this too, I feel stems from the lack of belief that they will actually achieve them.
I told people for many years that I was going to retire at age 49 and that I was then going to join the Senior PGA Tour. When I would tell people this I would chuckle about being a pro golfer and I see now that I never really believed that. I did however have a very vivid vision of me being retired as well as plans with back up plans to make sure that happened.
Had I had that same type of vision and plan for becoming a golfer on the tour, I would have done that as well.
Having the vision I had of selling my business and retiring was with me every minute of every day. It affected every decision I made because I knew in my head that it was going to happen. No matter how many people told me it was a pipe dream, no matter how many circumstances made it seem impossible, I just knew it was going to happen.
Did I will it to happen or maybe I just got lucky? I don’t think it was either, I think it was simply that I believed so strongly that it would happen that it helped me to make plans, follow through, stay on track, etc.
Do you think your dreams are too big? Is it possible that it’s not that your dreams are too big but that instead, you are just convincing yourself that they are?
