Why are good habits so hard to establish and bad ones so hard to get rid of?
Ask repeatedly, why do you do it that way? Are you doing that out of habit or because it’s the right thing to do?
I have asked many business owners why they charge what they do and you would be shocked at how many simply answer with responses like, “it’s the going rate”. Maybe you could charge more, do a better job or streamline your processes and charge less, either of which could make your business stand out.
Are you willing to spend thousands of dollars to purchase a piece of equipment that will make completing a task easier yet aren’t willing to spend a couple of hundred dollars on a service that could save you money and time every month? I see this one a lot too.
An example for you to ponder; the typical landscaper is continuously trying to figure out how to mow a lawn faster. It’s a habit of almost all of them to seek ways to do it faster. In order to do this they purchase the newest and fastest mower money can buy, the best weedeaters and the biggest backpack blowers. Because they have these big mowers they now need a big trailer to haul them and of course a big truck to pull the trailers. They can now mow lawns in like 15 to 20 minutes each and you should see them flying through their clients yards. With all of this equipment though, their payments every month are in the thousands so they now have to make sure that they can do as many lawns as possible every day. Of course to get more clients, they will need to spend more on marketing. With so many clients now, they may need to upgrade their software, hire a bookkeeper and bring on someone to help with administrative duties.
Or…. they could simply use a smaller mower, average weedeater and blower, smaller trailer and truck, take their time, have less clients and make just as much money, maybe more.
The example I’m trying to demonstrate is that many select their path simply because of the habits that they have instilled in them. They don’t question and analyze things enough.
Good habits are great but seem to be hard to instill, bad habits seem to be easy to take on and impossible to get rid of.
